Multiage

Multiage classrooms in St. Boniface are composed of students spanning two grade levels.  Within the classroom, teachers are able to group students according to their learning levels, learning styles, and/or interests.  Teachers are able to utilize flexible groupings where the students move from one group to another based on learning or interest needs and not grade levels.

Curriculum is covered in a manner that allows all students to proceed at their own pace.  Having students over a two year span gives teachers better knowledge about the strengths and weaknesses that challenge each student.  Science and Social Studies are divided into year A and year B topics to allow for thorough investigations of the subjects.  In math and reading teachers do ongoing assessments to determine
the progress of each student and change groups accordingly. This should not be confused with the outdated mode of grouping students and then not ever having them leave that group.  Children learn to be more accepting of each other’s differences as they work together and independently to reach curriculum standards.

Multiage classrooms allow students to develop  leadership or  mentor roles over the two years in a classroom.   This can help to build on self-esteem and self-confidence.  Students who graduate from St. Boniface are well prepared to face the many new challenges of high school.
